Cruising the Galapagos Islands – an Overview

The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic islands located in the Pacific Ocean, about 1000 kilometers (600 miles) from the coast of Ecuador. The islands are home to a unique variety of wildlife that is found nowhere else on Earth. Because of this, the Galapagos Islands have been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

There are two types of Galapagos tours that allow one to visit the Islands: by boat or by plane. Hopping on a Galapagos cruise is typically more luxurious, as it offers larger cabins and more amenities and access to the most remote parts of the islands. On another note, plane trips tend to offer shorter travel time between islands. But, no matter which type of trip you choose, you’re sure to have an unforgettable experience.

When to Go on a Galapagos Cruise

The best time to cruise the Galapagos Islands is between December and May. This is the dry season on the islands, which means you’ll have sunny weather and calm seas. Keep in mind that because the Galapagos is located near the Equator, the climate is warm year-round, so be sure to pack light clothing. Most importantly, remember to pack your sunscreen!

On the other hand, if you’re looking to escape the crowds, the best time to cruise the Galapagos Islands is between mid-April and early June. This is the shoulder season when tourism is slightly lower than usual. Keep in mind that prices will also be lower during this time.

How to Get There

If you’re cruising the Galapagos by boat, you’ll need to fly into either Baltra Island or San Cristobal Island. These are the two main ports of entry for boats cruising the islands. If you’re taking a plane trip, you’ll fly into one of these islands as well. Once you arrive, your cruise ship will take you to the other islands in the archipelago.

Most cruises of the Galapagos Islands last between seven and ten days. During this time, you’ll have the opportunity to explore all of the different islands and see the unique wildlife that each has to offer.
